Ex-PL Ref: Authorities should launch probe over Aston Villa controversy

IFAB should launch an investigation into Jacob Ramsey’s disallowed goal as Aston Villa beat Leicester City 2-1, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted Michael Oliver made the right decision but the confusion around the law should prompt a review.

Ramsey thought he had put his side in front just before half-time when he challenged for a loose ball with goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

However, Schmeichel had one hand on the ball and was therefore adjudged to have been in control and the goal was chalked off.

“First of all, I think this was clearly the right decision,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Conor Whitley.

“It shows how good VAR can be to ensure the process is right and they come to the correct decision.

“I think the big debate is the law states ‘The goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball when the ball is between the hand(s)’. Ok, fine. But then it confuses a little bit when it says ‘Except when the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper of the goalkeeper has made a save’.

“IFAB need to review this decision although it is correct. They need to explain what they mean by that part of the law.

“There are a lot of fans who are disagreeing with Michael Oliver’s decision based on the last part of the law. You hear the pundits dwell on that last part of the law.

“The laws of the game are written over many years to ensure the game is played with safety. You don’t want to endanger the goalkeeper.

“We have every right to protect the goalkeeper to some degree.”
