Exclusive: Aston Villa in advanced talks to seal first summer signing

Aston Villa are in advanced talks to sign Robin Olsen on a permanent deal, Football Insider understands.

The 32-year-old is currently on loan at Villa from Roma until the end of the season after joining in January.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Olsen has impressed Steven Gerrard and the Villa coaching staff despite not making a first-team appearance since his arrival.

Talks are underway to convert the goalkeeper’s loan into a permanent move and they are progressing smoothly.

Gerrard wants Olsen to provide cover and competition for number one Emiliano Martinez next season.

He could now become the ambitious Midlands club’s first summer signing.

Olsen moved to Villa Park on loan for the remainder of the season on 18 January.

He has been named on the bench 11 times by Gerrard but is yet to make his debut for the club.

However, the Sweden international does have Premier League experience.

He made 11 appearances for Everton during a loan spell at Goodison Park in the 2020-21 campaign.

His contract with AS Roma expires at the end of June 2023.

Olsen could be one of numerous permanent arrivals at Villa Park ahead of next season.

Gerrard plans to make major changes to his squad in a bid to bring European football to the Midlands club.

As revealed by Football Insider (19 April), Villa are interested in signing Rangers defender Filip Helander as they look to bolster their centre-back options.

A striker and holding midfielder are also on the club’s wish list.
