Exclusive: Aston Villa make formal move to sign player Emery called ‘Amazing’

Aston Villa have made an official move to sign Villarreal star Pau Torres, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands giants have been in contact with their Spanish counterparts as they attempt to lure him this summer.

The 26-year-old’s current contract expires in 2024 and Villarreal could be forced to cash in on their academy product this summer.

On 20 April, Football Insider revealed that Villarreal have been looking to offer Torres a new contract amid interest from Unai Emery’s side.

Emery is keen to link back up with his former player this summer as Villa prepare for what sources say will be a “huge” summer spending spree.

Torres has been on the radar of Premier League clubs including Tottenham and Man United, who were both keeping an eye on the defender’s situation last summer, but he wanted to stay in Spain.

But there is now a growing likelihood that he will depart this Spanish club this summer and Villa are beginning to push for a deal.

Villa boss Emery has been full of praise for the Spain international in the past as a player who was integral to the club’s turnaround back when he was in charge.

The 51-year-old manager insisted Torres is an “amazing player” and said he has “never seen a centre-back like Torres” despite having managed at some of the top clubs in Europe.

Torres made 39 appearances for Villarreal across all competitions this season, scoring one goal in those outings.
