Aston Villa are weighing up Steven Gerrard’s future after supporters once again chanted for his dismissal, sources have told Football Insider.
The club’s US owners Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens are concerned about the team’s failure to improve under the manager and it is now reaching crunch point over whether to keep him.
A well-placed Villa source explained that Sawiris and Edens have a big decision to make over whether to stick with Gerrard beyond the season’s cut-off before the World Cup next month.
The owners are unimpressed by the team’s development and the failure to improve despite big investment once again in the summer, following a busy January of transfer activity.
Edens and Sawiris are also aware that a section of travelling fans at the City Ground on Monday in the wake of the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest chanted “we want Gerrard out” at the final whistle.
That result left Villa 16th in the Premier League and just three points above the relegation zone.
Supporters are struggling to take to the Liverpool legend, whose arrival in November of last year was greeted by great excitement at Villa Park.
The appointment was pushed through by Villa chief executive Christian Purslow, who hailed it as a huge coup at the time.
Purslow is believed to be throwing his weight by Gerrard and insists he needs time to transform the team’s fortunes.
The next two to three weeks will be key to whether the manager makes it to and beyond his Villa Park anniversary.
Potential replacements have been discussed behind the scenes.
Football Insider revealed on 30 September that Mauricio Pochettino and Unai Emery are top of the club’s target list now Graham Potter has been appointed by Chelsea.
Former Tottenham and PSG boss Pochettino has reportedly already turned down an approach from French club OGC Nice.
Ex-Arsenal man Emery has a contract with Villarreal until next summer and the deal is understood to include a release clause.
