Leeds United attempted to hijack Aston Villa’s deal for Celtic sensation Aidan Borland, sources have told Football Insider.
The Yorkshire giants have tried to ambush Villa’s move for the 15-year-old when talks were already at an advanced stage.
But Leeds’ late push has failed and the Midlands outfit have now agreed a £300,000 fee, rising to £1.2million with add-ons, for the Celtic youth product.
Although the Hoops are believed to have offered Borland terms on his first professional contract, the midfielder is set to head south of the border and join Villa on an initial scholarship contract.
The teenager will be able to agree his first professional contract with the Midlands club when he turns 17 and will be a part of their youth setup until then.
Borland looks to be following in the footsteps of Rangers youth star Rory Wilson who joined Villa last summer.
Wilson has made 16 appearances for Villa’s youth teams and has scored 11 goals and provided one assist in those outings, but is yet to make his first team debut.
Celtic are no stranger to sending talented youngsters south of the border.
17-year-old Ben Doak joined Liverpool last summer and has already made five appearances for the first team.
The talented winger has made nine appearances for the Reds’ youth side in the Premier League 2 and has scored three goals and provided one assist in those outings.
Borland is a similarly impressive youth product and has already been capped at a youth international level for Scotland.
The teenager has made six appearances for Scotland’s under-16s side and has even captained his country at youth level.
