Expert lauds Aston Villa after Chukwuemeka update – ‘that is some deal’

Aston Villa should be happy after securing a reported £20million fee for Carney Chukwuemeka.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the youngster’s departure.

Chelsea announced the signing of Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa on Thursday (4 August).

Sky Sports report the deal is worth up to £20million.

This site revealed on 18 July that the young star wanted a wage of £100,000-a-week if he was to renew his contract at Villa Park – an outlay of £5.2million per year.

McLeish claims Villa may be better off with the £20million fee rather than keeping the player.

“Chelsea’s infrastructure makes it possible for that deal to happen,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“They are clearly very sure of their ability and his potential, to sign him for that kind of money.

“That is some deal for Aston Villa, it has to be said. This is another quality young player who is on the rise.

“He could go on to do things in the future but Villa now have that money to spend without losing a key player for the here and now.

“I’m sure they would have wanted to keep him but I’m not sure how possible that was.”

Chukwuemeka was linked with Europe’s elite – Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain were just two clubs to be linked – after he entered the last year of his current deal.

Villa face Bournemouth on Saturday (6 August) in their first Premier League game of the season.
