Expert on Archer leaving Aston Villa in January – ‘it has to happen’

Noel Whelan has backed Cameron Archer to “thrive” in the Championship again if Aston Villa boss Unai Emery decides to loan him out in January.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed “ruthless” Emery will have no qualms in axing the starlet if he deems him not up to standard.

Sources told this site on Monday (28 November) that Sunderland are among a number of Championship clubs chasing Aston Villa striker Archer, 20, ahead of the January window.

It is understood that clubs in the second tier are queuing up to take Archer on loan for the second half of the season following his spell at Preston in the 2021-22 campaign.

He scored seven goals in 20 Championship appearances for the Lancashire club before making his breakthrough for England’s Under-21 side.

New Villa boss Unai Emery already has strikers Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins to call on – and is targeting another A-list forward ahead of the winter window.

Archer has managed just 51 minutes of football this term.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s got a clean slate now and Emery will be looking at every player in all positions.

“But if he can’t quite do enough to get into those plans, then I think a loan move has to happen.

“Emery is ruthless and he will have a plan – he won’t want to keep a player who isn’t going to add anything to the first eleven.

“He’s a fantastic player and I’m sure he will thrive and catch the eye if he does go back to the Championship.”
