Finance guru: Aston Villa to reach ‘new level’ as Purslow announces summer overhaul

Aston Villa can reach a “new level” in the commercial department after they rebuild their retail and corporate facilities.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Villa’s plans to revamp the Villa Park site.

Villa CEO Christian Purslow announced last Thursday (14 April) plans to boost capacity at the 125-year-old stadium to beyond 50,000.

There are also designs to redevelop the club’s commercial amenities, with the first planning steps of the overhaul to begin this summer.

Villa pocketed £18million in commercial income in 2020-21, as per their most recent set of accounts.

And the club can raise the commercial stakes by improving their on-site facilities as part of the stadium redevelopment.

“There’s earned and unearned income,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“TV money, for example, is relatively unearned as they have very little control over it.

“Then matchday income and commercial, that is where you can stretch the margins and reach a new level.

“You want fans not just to come to the matches but to also visit the club shop and enjoy the experience in other ways.

“So, I think it’s really important to push this area given that it is one of the areas they can control.”

Villa are 15th in the Premier League after a run of four successive losses.

Steven Gerrard’s side are next in action against Leicester City on Saturday (23 April).
