Finance guru issues ‘£19m’ Aston Villa reveal as ‘big shake-up’ officially confirmed

Aston Villa will earn up to £19million per season in matchday income when they add 7,000 seats in a “big shake-up” to Villa Park.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Villa’s now-official stadium expansion plans.

Christian Purslow announced last Thursday (14 April) that they aim to take capacity beyond 50,000, with plans due to be submitted this summer.

The North Stand is set to be completely rebuilt and the club’s ageing commercial and retail facilities are also in line for a makeover.

Plumley ran the numbers and calculated just how much of a boost the new stadium plans could give Villa in terms of money through the turnstiles.

“It’s all about incremental growth,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“This would be a big shake-up. If we go back to 2019 before Covid, Villa earned £12.7m in matchday income for the season.

“That’s £600,000 per game, whereas you have Man United and Spurs making around £5m per game, so you can see the gap.

“Their average adult ticket price is about £30. So, a crude estimate would give them an extra 210,000 per game, so £810,000 per game.

“You can maybe stretch that to £1m per game with corporate and hospitality prices. So, we are talking maybe around £18m or £19m for the season.”

Purslow claimed that one of the main factors behind the expansion plans is a desire to stage matches at the UK and Ireland-hosted Euro 2028.

Villa posted a £38m loss for the last Covid-hit financial year.
