Former Aston Villa man can’t believe ‘unfair’ Gerrard claim as ‘wholesale changes’ expected

Frank McAvennie has defended Steven Gerrard as his Aston Villa side continues to struggle for form.

The former Villains hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the former Rangers boss can only be judged after a full season in charge.

Aston Villa have lost their last four Premier League games, conceding nine goals in the process.

These results leave Villa 12th in the table but they could still secure a top-half finish.

McAvennie insists any criticism of Gerrard is unfair.

“He’s come in and done so well, I don’t think he’s had enough credit,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The Coutinho signing was brilliant. That wouldn’t have happened without Gerrard.

“He’s a player who most clubs in the Premier League would take.

“There has been a bit of unfair criticism for Gerrard and I’m not sure why. He’s only been there a few months.

“This is a poor run of form, absolutely. But this isn’t his team. He will want to make wholesale changes in the summer.

“He did so well at Rangers and it took him a few years to get them ready to challenge for the title up there.

“Villa have the money to be up challenging for Europe in the future and Gerrard can take them there.

“He needs a full season before you can judge him.”

Aston Villa

Aston Villa are next in action against Leicester City on 23 April.

Their run-in features games against Burnley and Norwich before a final day clash against Manchester City.
