Hutton can’t believe McGinn could now be axed after Aston Villa development

Alan Hutton has urged Unai Emery to keep John McGinn as Aston Villa captain until at least the end of this season.

The former Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed being stripped of the captaincy over the summer “really affected” defender Tyrone Mings.

McGinn, 28, was given the armband over the off-season by former boss Steven Gerrard – who said the decision would help Mings “focus on his own game”.

Gerrard’s replacement Emery dropped the Scotland international for his first game in charge at Villa Park – giving vice-captain Emi Martinez the captaincy for the 3-1 win over Man United.

McGinn returned to the role when he was restored to the starting lineup for a 2-1 victory over Brighton.

The midfielder has made 17 appearances for Villa this term but is yet to register a goal or an assist.

Hutton urged Emery to review his options before making a final decision after the 2022-23 season finishes.

He told Football Insider: “Mid-season, I’d keep John McGinn as captain.

“I’d review it as the season progresses and make a change next summer if needed.

“It really affected Tyrone Mings over the summer, so why would you do it again? I see no reason to change it.

“Martinez was also the captain in Emery’s first game – but it’s all about results at this moment in time.

“John McGinn has got to remain the captain until the end of the season, at least.”
