Hutton claims Villa must sell to justify Martinez deal

Alan Hutton has claimed that Aston Villa will have to secure a “couple of exits” before they can make a potential move for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa Park full-back argued that Dean Smith would need to offload some of his current options between the sticks before looking to bring in fresh blood.

According to a report from The Independent, the Villans are readying a £10 million bid for the Gunners stopper.

But Villa already have Tom Heaton, Orjan Nyland, Jed Steer, and Lovre Kalinic as senior goalkeeping options, and Hutton has urged them to clear the decks a little before reinforcing in that area.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “He came in towards the end of last season and I thought he did very well. He looked very confident.

“It could be a good buy for Villa, but it depends what they’re looking for. Obviously they’ve got Tom Heaton to come back and he will be number one.

“If they’re going to go for a goalkeeper they have to get rid of somebody. You can’t have five first team goalkeepers on the books – it just doesn’t work.

“If this rumour is true and they do go for him, I think we’re probably going to see a couple of exits.”

Martinez impressed after coming into the Arsenal starting XI in place of the injured Bernd Leno after the Premier League restart earlier this summer.

The 28-year-old conceded nine goals in nine games for the Gunners, keeping three clean sheets in the process.
