Hutton reacts as Cash signing closes in

Alan Hutton admits he is “excited” as Aston Villa close in on the signing of Nottingham Forest full-back Matty Cash.

The former Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Forest star has established himself as a modern-day full-back after dropping back from his old role as a winger.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Villans are set to complete the capture of the 23-year-old this week and deal a hammer blow to Cash’s long-time suitors West Ham.

As previously detailed by this site, Cash made it clear to Forest he wanted out this summer after the club narrowly missed out on reaching the Championship play-offs last season.

Hutton, who came up against Cash in both the 2017/18 and 18/19 campaign, admits he has been hugely impressed with how the Forest youth graduate has adapted his game to become an exciting full-back.

Hutton told Football Insider: “Obviously I’ve known him for a long time, I’ve seen him play in a number of different positions, he was more of a winger when I came up against him.

“I think his last, last season, due to injuries in the squad he was tried at right-back and he’s really flourished. I think the modern-day full-back is about going forward and it seems to suit wingers a lot more.

“If you can really tie them down the defensive duties that they need to do, whether it be defending the back post or tucking round, simple little tweaks of their game, it can prove to really work well.

“You look at the likes of Maitland-Niles at Arsenal, these kind of guys fit in really well to the full-back position and it’s one I’m excited about.”

Cash played 45 times across all competitions for Forest last season, with three goals and five assists to his name.

He has a total of 141 appearances under his belt at the City Ground, 129 of which have come in the Championship.

In other news, Aston Villa have climbed above Leeds United to be in pole position to sign lethal forward.
