Hutton touts transfer breakthrough

Alan Hutton believes that Aston Villa will finally make a breakthrough this week in their pursuit of a new striker ahead of the new Premier League season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa and Scotland star believes the centre-forward role was a real “problem area” for Dean Smith last season.

As revealed by Football Insider, Ollie Watkins is set to undergo a medical with the Villans ahead of a £28million move after a long-winded hunt for a new centre-forward.

It is understood the Midlands outfit have also made a move for Bournemouth striker Josh King after they missed out on the capture of Callum Wilson from the Cherries despite having a bid accepted.

Hutton believes there needs to be a new centre-forward signing imminently ahead of the new Premier League season.

Asked if he thought there would be a breakthrough this week, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think so, I think there has to be. They need to make sure it’s the right person, they’ve made mistakes in the past, £9million or whatever bring someone in and hope it works and it’s not.

“Just look at the end of last season, it was tough, if you’re looking at Davis and Samatta, their stats weren’t great so it was a problem area. I think Dean Smith and his staff will know they need someone in.

“The season is fast approaching, it’s come round so quickly, pre-season’s done now, they’ve got a cup game and then they’re into it and it’s such a big season, they want to build on what they did last year.

“I know they’ll be looking at different targets but they need someone that’s going to come in and score you 15 goals. That’s the difference between finishing one point above relegation and finishing 10th.

“It’s such a big position to fill so for me they’re going to have to get somebody in.”
