Diego Carlos is ahead of schedule in his recovery at Aston Villa and is preparing to make a return to the first team at the end of February.
That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
Since making his move to Villa Park for £26million in the summer, Carlos has only been able to feature twice for the Villans before rupturing his achilles tendon.
The Brazilian centre-back is approaching the six-month mark of his recovery, and he is on the brink of returning to training.
Unai Emery told reporters last Sunday (23 January) that Carlos is “getting better” but still faces “a month or two” before returning to the matchday squad.
Dinnery revealed that Carlos is training individually and is making great progress in his injury rehabilitation.
“Diego Carlos is progressing really well,” Dinnery told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“He’s not with the group as it stands, but he is training outside and working individually.
“He’s coming through those protocols and making brilliant progress.
“An achilles rupture is high on the list of injuries that will keep a player sidelined for a long time, and so Aston Villa are in dreamland after finding out he might be able to make a return to play before the end of the season.
“With things ahead of schedule at the moment, we’re certainly looking at game time towards the back end of February.“
