‘It’s a safety issue’ – Play between Southampton and Aston Villa suspended due to a drone flying over Saint Mary’s with players taken off the pitch

Salisbury took both sets of players off the pitch for their safety and they made their way to their respective dressing rooms.

The match was suspended at 0-0, with neither side able to find the breakthrough down on the south coast.

However, play was resumed just a few minutes after the incident, with just moments remaining in the first half.

Arsenal legend Perry Groves was co-commentating on the game for talkSPORT 2 and couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

He exclaimed: “What do these people get out of this?

“We’ve just had the Match of the Day prank, although I thought that was Gary Neville commentary.

Players went sent to their dressing rooms as a result

“The Saints fans will just get their half-time beverage early. The security and the police have to go and check this out. How far away can they be?

“It’s a safety issue. The referee has done the right thing.”

Southampton need a win to take them out of the Premier League relegation zone, with Villa currently sitting in 11th.
