Alan Hutton has backed Aston Villa to significantly improve their youth recruitment after global expansion plans were revealed.

The former Villa star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he was excited by the proposal laid out by Christian Purslow.

Speaking to Villa TV last Saturday (27 November), the club’s chief executive revealed the board’s plans to put Villa at “the heart of an international talent development and talent recruitment model”.

He explained owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris could invest in other clubs overseas to help boost worldwide recruitment.

The plans would also help Villa overcome hurdles in terms of rules over player registration.

Hutton suggested the proposal would allow the Villans to improve their youth recruitment and sign the best hot prospects from around the world.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think that’s the way forward.

“You have to look at the youth side of it. Arguably, over the last 10 years, there has not been enough that’s come through the Aston Villa academy. They’re starting to branch out.

“When the owners came in, they said what they wanted to do. They wanted the club to be challenging for the European places, but not just spending money.

“Looking at all the young players, everything around the world and building the brand, making these connections with clubs across the world.

“Then you can bring players over and let them experience this league. Let them find out what it’s like to play for Aston Villa and hopefully get them in the first team.

“It links up with what the owners see for the future of the team. It’s great for the future.”

Villa have seen a handful of youth prospects break into the first team in recent years, including Jack Grealish.

Midfielder Jacob Ramsey is the latest graduate to establish himself among the senior side.

The 20-year-old has 12 Premier League appearances under his belt this season.
