Trevor Sinclair says Jack Grealish has to go to the Euros amid reports he could be left out of the England squad this summer.
Gareth Southgate has already started telling players whether or not they are likely to make the final 23-man squad – two months before it is officially named.
Aston Villa midfielder Grealish missed the recent international break through injury, which allowed players like Jesse Lingard to be included.
Lingard impressed against the likes of San Marino and Albania and could be a shock inclusion for the summer tournament, despite only a recent return to form.
It could mean a star like Grealish or Jadon Sancho could miss out, according to a report in The Sun.
It would be a harsh move omitting the Villa man from the final squad.
He has created 65 chances from open play in the Premier League this season, 25 more than any other English player.
Former Man City and West Ham winger Sinclair compared Grealish to England legend Paul Gascoigne and said Southgate could regret it if he leaves him out.
“You’ve got to have principles and certain standards playing for England. I understand all that, but there’s mavericks in the team who are not quite as squeaky clean as some other players,” Sinclair told talkSPORT Breakfast.
“It’s about winning games and winning tournaments, for me, it’s man management and making sure those players, when they are away with England, behave themselves.
“Grealish is a no-brainer. If you are leaving Gazza out the team, you might as well get prepared for the sack because you are leaving the best player in England out the team.
“It’s almost the same with Grealish because when he’s played this season, everyone is on the same page. He has been absolutely superb. He has to go.
“If you start relying on Mason Mount and (Phil) Foden, who are very young and quite inexperienced at international level and they don’t come alive at the tournament then straight away you job is under pressure.”
Sinclair also didn’t understand why Southgate was telling players now about their status for the squad.
There’s still a lot of football to be played in the 2020/21 season, meaning more chances for injury before his squad is announced.
“I don’t understand it,” Sinclair added. “I know it’s in quite a numerous amount of papers this morning, but for me, you’ve got a situation with especially Grealish who’s had a calf injury and all of a sudden it’s a shin injury.
“The style of play and performance he had in the last International break for England was superb.
“Everyone was talking about Jack Grealish and if you’re going to miss him out the squad because he’s had an injury for a few weeks, I can’t understand that.
“I don’t understand telling players either, there’s going to be injuries. This is a trophy season where you get your place in the top four, keep your team up, win a trophy. Everyone is putting 100 per cent into everything, so there’s going to be injuries.
“I don’t understand why you would tell players.”
