Kieran Maguire reveals Aston Villa ‘suspicion’ amid £5m NSWE twist

The £5million share issue at Aston Villa is another cash injection from owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the share issue is not likely to be on a loans-to-equity basis.

As revealed by Football Insider on Wednesday (10 May), Villa owners Edens and Sawiris have injected another £5m into the club in the form of a new share issue.

A Companies House submission showed that 5 million new shares were allotted for £1 each on 26 April.

It marks the seventh time in the last 12 months that Villa’s owners have issued new shares, taking the total amount invested in that time to £123.5m.

Maguire has a ‘suspicion’ that the shares were issued as a direct cash injection as Villa may need to balance their books before the summer transfer window.

My gut feeling is that it is a cash issue, because at this time of year before the summer window, clubs often need a cash injection,” Maguire told Football Insider.

There are season ticket sales bringing money into the club, but that won’t be a significant amount.

“It has been the modus operandi of Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris since they took charge at Villa Park to inject money in this way, and neither are short of cash.

So my suspicion is that the latest £5million in shares is a cash injection.
