Kieran Trippier leaves Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa with an injury to worry fans given influence of defender and his free-kicks as club celebrate another Premier League victory

After a blistering start to his Newcastle career, Kieran Trippier was worryingly substituted during their 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

The defender, who was signed from Atletico Madrid in January, looks to be a fantastic addition after his first four games for the Magpies.

The England international has scored two goals – both free-kicks – since his move to St James’ Park, with the latest coming in their victory over Villa on Sunday.

However, Trippier, who captained his new team in that win, was substituted just after half-time with an injury and subsequently gone to hospital.

Eddie Howe’s side struggled after the 31-year-old was replaced by Emil Krafth, with the Newcastle defence struggling to hold onto their lead.

They were saved by VAR, after the officials in Stockley Park came to the conclusion that Ollie Watkins was offside, having headed the ball in at the back post.

Krafth was the man keeping him onside and was fortunate to get away with some sloppy defending.

The Magpies supporters will be hoping that Trippier’s injury won’t keep him out for too long, with games against West Ham and Brentford coming up.

His influence on the side has been clear, scoring as many goals in four Premier League games for Newcastle as he did in 107 for Tottenham.

Three of those four goals have been direct free-kicks.

“That’s probably where we lost

“He’s gone to hospital to get an x-ray,” manager Eddie Howe explained afterwards.

“I think he got a stamp on his foot,” he continued, adding that everything is crossed that it’s nothing serious.
