Leeds United hat-trick hero Patrick Bamford reveals the reason behind his ‘bolt’ celebration against Aston Villa

After mystifying the Aston Villa defence on the way to 19-minute hat-trick, Patrick Bamford left football fans bemused with his celebration.

The Leeds United striker, 27, held up his fingers to form what looked like a ‘Z’ or a bolt after his second strike on the night.

Bamford has, though, now revealed all in an Instagram post: “This is the bolt,” he stated. “It’s a symbol for Planet, a force of nature and the centre of @hyloathletics mission using sport to inspire positive change for our ????.

Sport, and particularly football in this country, has enormous power for good.

“Celebrating with the bolt is my way of standing up for our earth. Climate change is a threat to sport and if we don’t act, it’s going to get worse. I’m passionate about leaving our Planet in a better place than we found it. #BoltforPlanet”

According to Hylo Athletics’ website the company is creating sustainable running shoes.

A statement reads: As a group of pro and amateur athletes, we believe the future of sport needs radical change. It is our goal to reinvent sports shoes and push for new standards in an industry that has been slow to do anything about its environmental footprint. Today, textile production contributes more to global warming than aviation. We’re working to change that.”

Bamford is one of the company’s ‘Champions of Tomorrow’ along with golfer Charley Hull, boxer George Davey, and England cricketer Sophie Ecclestone.

The shoes can be completely reused when they are no longer of use with Hylo Athletics turning the fabric into compost and grinding up the soles to be used in other Hylo shoes.

Ex-Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Middlesbrough star has faced scrutiny throughout his career with some pundits wondering if he was able to perform in the Premier League but his treble against Villa in a 3-0 win now has him on six goals in six games this season.

But many are now having to back-track on their comments, including talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino.

Speaking on the Weekend Sports Breakfast he said.“The manager has made a massive impact. He’s seen something many people [didn’t]. Pundits, fans, people in general [thought] that Bamford wasn’t good enough.

“I saw Patrick when he was about 19 a couple of times, I saw him at Gillingham one day, he got a brace, he always was a finisher.

“In about 2015 he went about 18 months without a goal, and he went from Crystal Palace to Norwich, to Burnley and hardly played, before he ended up going to Middlesbrough for £6million.

“He did score a goal in that period from the July to the January after, before he got to Boro, and there were questions marks.

“There have also been question marks from the managers that have had him, who would played him, then left him out, played him, then left him out.

“That even happened at Leeds when Bielsa first got there, he wasn’t a certain starter.

“But what we’ve seen is Bamford has improved, and he has got to take a massive amount of credit, for having the drive to become a better player, but it’s definitely come from the manager, too.

“The manger has overachieved with a lot of Leeds players that weren’t deemed good enough, and Bamford is one of that number, about seven or eight players that have come on leaps and bounds.

“Watch Patrick last night, he is worthy of being a Premier League player. All three of his goals, he’s got quick feet, he sticks the ball in the corner.

“Fair play to him. I’ve played with a lot of players who aren’t really that good but achieve way more than what they are capable of, and he’s doing that because he’s putting the effort in, he has the desire, and he’s got a manager who is pushing him really hard.

“And last night’s hat-trick was the result. I’m so happy I paid £15 to watch it!”
