‘Let’s Be Honest’ – Pundit backs Aston Villa chief after Kieran Maguire’s £34.5m Sat reveal

Paul Robinson has applauded Aston Villa chief Christian Purslow for contesting the potential introduction of a transfer levy on Premier League clubs.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Leeds United goalkeeper said a chief executive’s priority should always be the welfare of his own club.

In Tracey Crouch’s Fan-led Review of Football Governance (24 November), a 10 per cent transfer levy for Premier League clubs has been proposed.

The idea would have generated £160million per annum over the past five years for the football pyramid.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire revealed to Football Insider (27 November) that a 10 per cent levy would have cost Villa £34.5million since 2020.

Speaking on talkSPORT (25 November), Villa chief executive Christian Purslow protested against the introduction of such a tax.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the proposal and Purslow’s stance, Robinson said: “There is a lot of clubs who are looking after themselves but rightly so.

“Chairmans, chief executives, their first interest is their own club. That is their job at the end of the day.

“You can see it from both sides though. An independent regulator is important because over the past 12 months we have seen a number of problems arise in English football.

“I can completely understand Purslow’s stance though. He is trying to protect his own assets. Let’s be honest, that is exactly what you would expect from someone in his position.”
