McLeish fears for Gerrard amid Aston Villa latest – ‘this will be thrown at him’

Steven Gerrard must get his Aston Villa side winning soon or his recent decisions will come back to haunt him.

That’s according to former Villains boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest controversy at Villa Park.

Tyrone Mings was benched for new signing Diego Carlos on Saturday (6 August) as Aston Villa suffered an opening day defeat against Bournemouth.

The defender was stripped of the captaincy by Gerrard last month, with John McGinn assuming the role.

As quoted by the BBC after Saturday’s (6 August) loss, the former Rangers boss insisted “when Tyrone is back at his best and looks me in the eye and shows that he’s ready to play, he’ll get opportunities.”

McLeish insists Gerrard’s decisions would be acceptable if Villa were performing better on the pitch.

“It seems like something has happened between them,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“Either Steven doesn’t fancy him or he thinks he should be doing better, that’s entirely the manager’s prerogative.

“I thought the change of captaincy was something that would help the team and free up Mings in terms of his defensive duties.

“He was possibly feeling the pressure a bit, that’s how I saw it. It seems that it is something more than that.

“It is within a manager’s right to do what he does for the team but when you are losing, it is going to affect everything.

“That’s what Stevie has to sort out. If they don’t start winning then all of these things will be thrown at him.

“I’ve had it myself. That’s the way the game is. If you don’t get the results and you have made some changes, sometimes these things happen.

“We don’t know what goes on inside those walls.”
