McLeish verdict on Cash signing for £16m

Alex McLeish is convinced Aston Villa new boy Matty Cash will be a big attacking weapon for the team in the upcoming season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Russell Edge, the former Villa manager revealed he is a big admirer of the 23-year-old right-back.

Villa confirmed the signing of the right-back last Thursday after agreeing a deal with Forest worth £12million rising to a potential £16m with add-ons.

Cash got his wish to move to a Premier League club after graduating from the youth ranks at Forest to make 141 senior appearances.

Tellingly, he demonstrated his prowess in the attacking third last season, with his 42 Championship appearances yielding an impressive three goals and five assists.

When asked for his verdict on Villa’s latest recruit, new Football Insider columnist McLeish said: “He looks a talent, doesn’t he? I remember one of his goals back in the season when he rifled one in from the right side into the top corner.

“You see when a guy unleashes one like that with unerring accuracy and power, that lightens everything up and it just makes you want to say: ‘Who is this guy? I want to see more of him’.

“I know he’s been doing that, not scoring goals the whole season, but that sort of attacking flair that has made him the subject of the transfer to Villa.

Slough-born Cash has signed a five-year contract with the Midlands giants.

In other news, Aston Villa have made a breakthrough in centre-forward pursuit.
