Miguel Almiron was forced to watch from the stands as Newcastle beat Manchester United, West Ham and Brentford last week after suffering a thigh injury.
The Paraguayan international has been a revelation for the Toon this year and is their top goalscorer with 11 goals from 25 Premier League games.
But he missed the 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest before the international break after pulling up in training.
Almiron has been crucial to Newcastle’s top-four challenge, but Eddie Howe was without the winger for the Magpies’ wins over Man United, the Hammers and the Bees.
What’s the latest on Almiron?
After initially suffering the injury in the build-up to the Forest clash, Howe confirmed Almiron’s thigh problem was ‘bad’ and he would be out for ‘six weeks’.
Yet Almiron posted images and videos on his Instagram stories on a bike and running, suggesting the injury wasn’t as bad as Howe feared.
However, Almiron took no part in the Toon’s team training in Dubai over the international break and missed the subsequent fixtures
And speaking last week ahead of the Red Devils match, Howe confirmed Almiron would be out for a while.
“I’d love him to beat the timescale given, but I don’t see it currently.
“He’s making good progress and he’s pain free, so I don’t think there’s any long-term issues, but it’s just the time it takes for the muscle to heal.
“I think we’re four weeks off, maybe slightly less, but he’s making really good progress.”
However, the forward has since returned to training and has an outside chance of playing against Aston Villa this weekend.
Speaking ahead of the match, Howe said: “He’s done really well. He’s ahead of schedule at the moment, so fingers crossed, he gets through training and he could be available very soon.”
