Mills drops big Watkins claim amid injury update

Wesley will “struggle” to break back into the Aston Villa team given the form of Ollie Watkins, according to Danny Mills.

The former Leeds and Manchester City defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, heaped praise on the performances of Watkins, 24, since his arrival from Brentford this summer.

The £33million signing scored a brace in a 3-0 victory against Arsenal yesterday to take his season tally to six in seven games.

Wesley has not featured for the Claret and Blue since New Year’s Day after the Brazilian suffered knee ligament damage in a 2-1 victory at Burnley.

He returned to the gym last week as he nears his long-awaited return from injury but is still not expected to be available for selection until after Christmas.

When asked by Football Insider if Wesley would find game time limited this season given the former of Watkins, Mills said:

“He is going to struggle to get into that team and that is what you hope to be the case.

“It does not matter if you are a big-money signing or a little money signing or a free transfer. Dean Smith will just want the best players in his team and he will not look at it and go, ‘Who is doing the best job?’

“Ollie Watkins is doing the best job right now so he is going to stay in the team. It is as simple as that.”
