Mills reacts as Smith lines up reported move for 29yo

Danny Mills has warned Dean Smith that he will have to be “very shrewd” in this transfer market as Aston Villa are linked with a move for James McCarthy.

The former Leeds and Manchester City right-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the 29-year-old would add much needed competition for places at Villa Park.

The Daily Mail report that the Claret and Blue are lining up a £5million bid for the Crystal Palace midfielder with Smith keen to add experience to his squad this summer.

McCarthy, who moved to Selhurst Park last August, made 35 appearances last season after making a full recovery from a double leg fracture suffered while at Everton in 2018.

Mills suggested that Villa must strengthen in the transfer market after narrowly avoiding relegation last term.

“They already have McGinn, Grealish and a number of other players in there that can play that position,” he told Football Insider.

“Villa were fortunate this season, talk about getting out by the skin of your teeth.

“They need to strengthen and James McCarthy can add a little bit of quality and strength in depth. Villa need competition for places fo that could be a good move.

“It is going to be a strange, depressed market so Dean Smith will have to be very shrewd.”

Villa spent over £140million last summer upon their return to the top flight of English football.

However, the large majority of the signings made were made by the recently sacked sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch.
