Mings could now quit Aston Villa for Premier League rivals after new claim – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed that Tyrone Mings will have interest from “a lot of Premier League clubs” as his Aston Villa contract runs down.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 29-year-old is “in the driving seat” due to his “strong” recent performances.

Mings has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Aston Villa after signing a four-year extension to his deal in 2020.

The former Bournemouth defender has made 147 appearances for the Midlands giants after signing for a reported £25million in 2019.

He was stripped of the captaincy by former boss Steven Gerrard during the summer but has played 90 minutes in every Premier League match since 16 September.

Mings has forged a partnership with Ezri Konsa – but their place could be under threat when Diego Carlos returns from his long-term injury next month.

When asked if he has done enough for a new deal, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he has.

“He’s had to endure a turbulent time, with the captaincy being taken away, question marks over his ability, a new manager coming in.

“But he’s been strong enough to come through all of that.

“He’s probably the best centre-back at the club, and that consistency deserves a new contract.

“Whether he signs or not, it is completely up to him. He’s in the driving seat now because he only has a year left.

“He’s put himself in a good position with his performances. I think he’s a player that a lot of Premier League clubs would want to look at.

“He can deliver good performances every week and be that leader on the pitch. There isn’t many of those kinds of players about.”
