Newcastle closing in on Matt Targett deadline day deal after missing out to Aston Villa on Lucas Digne signing

Newcastle are closing in on completing a deadline day loan move for Aston Villa defender Matt Targett, talkSPORT understands.

Talks between Newcastle and Villa intensified on Sunday night with former Southampton left-back Targett believed to be keen on a switch to the north east.

Targett has fallen down the pecking order at Villa following the arrival of Lucas Digne from Everton

The 26-year-old joined the club from the Saints in 2019 in a £11.5million deal and has gone on to play 73 times for the club.

Last season, he was voted Players’ Player of the Season after featuring in all 38 Premier League matches for the club.

But he has featured just twice in the league this season.

Targett’s opportunities under new manager Steven Gerrard took a further blow when Villa signed Digne from the Toffees for around £25million.

The France defender had been a target for Eddie Howe, but missed out to their Premier League rivals.

Now the Magpies want to raid Villa to bring the left-back to the north east as Howe looks to build a new defence.

Kieran Trippier signed from Atletico Madrid at the start of the window and more could be coming before the window closes.

Newcastle are understood to have agreed a £13million fee for Brighton defender Dan Burn, while are also in talks with Manchester United to sign goalkeeper Dean Henderson on loan.
