Newcastle United news: Hutton reacts to Joelinton ahead of Villa

Alan Hutton claims that Joelinton’s goal against Sheffield United is a “massive boost” for Newcastle United ahead of their clash versus Aston Villa.

The former Villa and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he fears for his old side after seeing the Brazilian break his lengthy barren spell in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old, who is Newcastle’s record signing, scored his first top-flight goal since August against the Blades to help Steve Bruce’s men to a 3-0 win.

The striker, who fluffed an excellent chance in the first half, managed to tap in Miguel Almiron’s low cross with what was his last touch of the ball before being subbed off.

Hutton insists that being a striker is all about confidence and that his goal is bad news for Villa ahead of Wednesday’s meeting at St James’ Park.

“I just see a striker as a confidence position, that’s all it is, because they’re all about stats and numbers and goals,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“I had it with Benteke at Villa at a stage when he wasn’t scoring so you see it all the team. It doesn’t matter how they go in – off the shin, off their back, anything – it’s a massive boost in confidence.

“You’re always as good as your last game, as they always say, and if you’ve scored as a striker then your confidence is high, you feel that little bit of pressure has eased because even if you don’t score the next game, you have just recently scored so it does lift the pressure off them.

“That’s dangerous, especially with Newcastle coming into such a big game against Villa – his confidence will be high, he’s just scored and Villa want to keep it out. It’s good for Newcastle, bad for Villa but hopefully they can stay strong.”

Joelinton has netted four times and contributed four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions since joining from Hoffenheim last summer.

Villa head into Wednesday’s clash off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea which leaves them floundering in the relegation zone.

In other Newcastle United news, former referee Keith Hackett has delivered his verdict on a major flashpoint against Sheffield United.
