Ollie Watkins has extended his glorious record against Brighton by scoring a hat-trick against Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
The Aston Villa forward already had a great record against the Seagulls, having scored three times in five matches against the South coast side.
Watkins’ second goal will be steeped in controversy with Jason Steele’s view seemingly blocked[/caption]
However the Saturday lunchtime clash at Villa Park saw him strengthen that record in spectacular style.
First, Watkins got on the end of a wonderful Matty Cash cross to convert, before he grabbed his second of the game with a wonderful solo effort that was allowed following a VAR check to see if the goalkeeper’s view was obstructed by Nicolo Zaniolo.
The check adjudged that his view was not obstructed, however replays of the incident have suggested otherwise.
Those goals took his record to five goals in six games against the Seagulls, leading Sam Matterface to hail him ‘the Seagull slayer’ on talkSPORT’s exclusive coverage.
His co-commentator, Stuart Pearce added: “Whatever could go wrong has gone wrong for Brighton.
“Villa’s luck has been in. Watkins’ shot for the second goal was a mis-hit, there was an offside as well, and there was a foul in the build-up to the third.”
Things got even better for Villa though, with a Pervis Estupinan own goal putting the home side 3-0 up inside 26 minutes to ensure that Brighton would have to do something quite special to get back into the game.
Ansu Fati did claw one back for the Seagulls, however Watkins wrapped up a perfect day at the office for himself by rounding off his hat-trick with his 50th goal for Aston Villa.
