Phillips drops Mings claim after big update

Kevin Phillips has tipped Tyrone Mings to show his best form for Aston Villa this season after the defender put pen to paper on a contract extension at Villa Park.

The former Claret and Blue, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that “a lot had happened” to the 27-year-old over the past couple of seasons and suggested that it was the reason his form had been inconsistent in 2020.

The West Midlands club confirmed on Monday that the centre-half had signed a contract extension until the summer of 2024.

He joined Villa captain Jack Grealish in committing his long-term future to the club after Grealish put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Villa Park.

Mings has made 57 appearances in Claret and Blue having signed permanently from Bournemouth for a fee of Ā£20million in July 2019.

When asked by Football Insider whether Villa fans should be excited by the season ahead following the latest contract announcement, Phillips said:

“It is important that we do not get too carried away because it is going to be another tough season for Aston Villa.

“To secure Jack Grealish last week and tie Tyrone Mings down this week is fantastic news. It is always a good sign when you tie your best players down to new contracts.

“There are signs that they have slightly improved from last year.

“A lot has happened to Tyrone Mings in a short space of time. He performed at Bournemouth, got a big move to Villa and last season he broke into the England squad – it is only natural that you will have a slight dip in form. Every player does.

“He is settled now and knows the Premier League so I expect him to perform a lot more consistently this season.”
