Kevin Phillips has suggested that Emiliano Martinez is pushing for a move to Aston Villa after the Arsenal goalkeeper agreed personal terms with the West Midlands club.

The former Claret and Blue, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the 28-year-old would be a “great signing” for Dean Smith’s side given his wealth of experience at the top level.

Martinez was left out of Mikel Arteta’s squad that beat Fulham yesterday to further suggest that he is about to leave the club.

Football Insider revealed yesterday that the keeper had agreed personal terms on a £75,000-a-week contract at Villa Park.

Sky Sports claim that Villa have seen a bid of £16million accepted by Arsenal for the Argentinian shot-stopper with add-ons that could see that fee rise to £20million.

When asked by Football Insider if Martinez would be a welcome addition at Villa Park, Phillips said: “I imagine that Martinez is pushing for this one.

“He wants to play week in, week out and because of Bernd Leno he is not going to be guaranteed that at Arsenal this season.

“Arsenal have made some bad decisions on players in the past, letting their contracts run down or letting them leave.

“From Villa’s point of view if they can get someone in with the experience that he has got, it would be a great signing for them.”

Martinez has made 38 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal and earned plaudits for his performances at the end of the 2019/20 campaign in the absence of the injured Bernd Leno.

The goalkeeper, who signed for the Gunners from Independiente in 2010, has two years remaining on his current deal at the Emirates.
