Phillips reacts to Cash signing for £16m

Kevin Phillips has warned Aston Villa new boy Matty Cash that the Premier League will be a big step up after he completed his move from Nottingham Forest.

The former Claret and Blue striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the club had spent “a fair chunk of money” on acquiring the 23-year-old’s services.

Villa confirmed the signing of the right-back this morning after Football Insider revealed last week that a deal was set to be announced.

The fee is in the region of £12million but could rise to near £16million if performance related add-ons are met.

Cash‘s 45 appearances last season yielded three goals and five assists, an impressive return for a full-back.

When asked by Football Insider for his verdict on Villa’s newest recruit, Phillips said:

“Cash has performed in the Championship but for me it is a slight gamble. It is a big step up to the Premier League.

“He gets up and down the park, good energy and a good delivery so I will be very interested to see how he copes with the Premier League. Of course it will not be anywhere near as easy as it was when he was playing for Nottingham Forest.

“Dean Smith is not daft, he will have done his homework. £16million is a fair chunk of money but he could turn out to be a shining light. It is certainly a position that needed to be addressed at Villa so let’s hope Matty Cash settles in and has a good season.”

Villa boss Dean Smith said: “We are delighted to welcome Matty to Villa and believe we have secured one of England’s brightest young prospects.

“He has an excellent playing record for a young player and we believe he will settle in easily and continue his rapid development into a top full-back.”
