Player Ratings: Southampton 1-0 Aston Villa – Villans fall to a fifth consecutive defeat!

Emi Martinez: 7/10

Left completely stranded for Adam Armstrong’s thunderbolt in the opening minutes of the game, but made a number of key saves to deny the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu from inflicting more damage to Aston Villa.

Matty Cash: 7/10

Was absolutely all over the pitch on the evening as he won more duels (seven), made more tackles (five), and made more interceptions (three) than any other player in the first half. Continued to put in a solid shift in the second half, which will do him well heading into international duty with Poland.

xel Tuanzebe: 6/10

Slowly grew into the game as the minutes flew by, but could have arguably been a tad stronger in a number of ball-winning opportunities.

Tyrone Mings: 7/10

The Villa captain put in a more spirited effort on the evening and showed glimpses of the quality that Villa fans have come to expect from the central defender.

Matt Targett: 5/10

Continues to look like a shadow of himself when compared to the form he was in last season — time to give the left-back a break perhaps?

John McGinn: 6/10

Struggled to get into the game, with his most positive contribution being a shot that blazzed over the Southampton goal in the first half.

Marvelous Nakamba: 6/10

Showed moments of defensive quality, but his decision making and passing ability let him down on a number of occasions.

Emi Buendia: 6/10

Once again, Buendia is CLEARLY not a central attacking midfielder and it showed at St. Mary’s, with the Argentine struggling to dictact play in the middle of the pitch. Had a few positive spells in attacking areas, but he really needs to play on the right in order to benefit in this Villa side.

Leon Bailey: 5/10

A disappointing night for the winger as he struggled to create the real bits of quality required in a tough game against Southampton.

nwar El Ghazi: 6/10

Lucky to still be on the pitch after some risky tackles, but was brave enough to have a go at goal at times when others just wouldn’t take the risk.

Ollie Watkins: 6/10

Struggled to get into attacking areas at times and didn’t appear to press the Southampton defense like he typically would in the past — a trait that Villa fans admire Ollie for.

SUBSTITUTES:

Jacob Ramsey (63 mins): 6/10

Replaced Nakamba in an attempt to ramp up the attacking efforts for Villa, but with the lack of cohesive play throughtout the side, it was always going to be tough for the young Villan.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Emi Martinez

Absolutely class when called upon and was clearly Villa’s best player on the evening at St. Mary’s. He’ll be hoping that the players in front of him put forward similar efforts to what we witnessed last season and you would have to say that the international break may have come at the perfect time.
