Pundit can’t believe Zaha could join Aston Villa as ‘verbal offer’ submitted

Noel Whelan has claimed Wilfried Zaha won’t consider a move to Aston Villa if he leaves Crystal Palace next summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 30-year-old would prefer to join a London club and challenge for trophies.

Aston Villa are reportedly the bookmakers’ favourite to sign Zaha – who has been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks.

According to the London Evening Standard (2 November), the winger is stalling on a “verbal offer” made by current club Crystal Palace – raising fears of a potential departure from Selhurst Park.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (10 November) that Aston Villa want to sign a top-class forward capable of operating across the front line in the upcoming window.

Zaha has notched six goals and two assists in 13 Premier League games for Palace this season.

Whelan insisted Villa cannot deliver the accolades the 30-year-old will be targeting as he enters the twilight years of his career.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think realistically, you can only see him going to a London club.

“I don’t think he wants to leave the capital unless it’s for Man City. We saw him go to Man United, and he wasn’t the same player.

“If he’s going to finish his career and finish it on a high – you’re looking at Arsenal, Chelsea, or Tottenham.

Aston Villa

“I don’t see Aston Villa as a potential.

“He’ll want to challenge for league titles, cups, and play in the Champions League. That’s not something that Villa can offer.”
