Pundit issues ‘big’ Gerrard sack verdict after what he’s spotted at Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard has bought himself more time as Aston Villa boss after drawing with Man City at the weekend.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the former Rangers man’s future.

Aston Villa drew 1-1 against last season’s champions on Saturday (3 September) – and could have sealed all three points if Philippe Coutinho’s goal wasn’t wrongly ruled out.

The Midlands giants remain 17th in the table following the result after just one win from their first six league games of the new campaign.

Football Insider revealed last month (29 August) that Gerrard’s position as manager is far from secure and the club’s ambitious American owners won’t hesitate to sack him if results do not improve.

Kenny claims Gerrard has bought himself some more time and is backing him to turn Villa’s fortunes around.

“Villa have to take a lot of credit from that game,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“But they have to take that into other games now as well, that tenacity, you have to do that every week now.

“If they do that then they will be fine, they were brilliant and, to be honest, they could have won that game, enough has been said about that offside decision.

“We know the pressure has been on Gerrard so that was a big win for him, a real positive.

“It was just what he needed and maybe that result will just focus minds.”

Villa are next in action against Leicester on Saturday (10 September).

Leicester are facing similar struggles having failed to win this season.
