Kevin Phillips has claimed Morgan Sanson could leave Aston Villa in the summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the legendary Premier League striker claimed Steven Gerrard is “not afraid to make the big calls” and Sanson’s recent behaviour may see him forced out.
The midfielder, 27, has not featured for Aston Villa since storming off after being substituted during the 2-2 draw with Man United last month (15 January).
According to Birmingham Liveβs Patrick Rowe (14 February), he cut βa dejected figure” as Villa were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United last Sunday (13 February).
Sanson remained an unused substitute as Douglas Luiz, John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey all struggled at St. James’ Park.
“Steven Gerrard’s clearly not afraid to make the big calls and big decisions,” Phillips told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“He let Matt Targett go when he brought Lucas Digne in after Targett was player of the season last year.
“He’ll do what is right for the football club going forward. If you’ve got a player who storms off and is then not starting and is on the bench that’s a sure sign that the club will start to look at other players to come in and do that role.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he was to move on in the summer.”

Sanson has managed just seven appearances across all competitions this season.
The Frenchman moved to Villa Park from Marseille in January 2021 and is under contract until the summer of 2025.
