Pundit suggests Aston Villa could sack Gerrard after source’s update – ‘it’s too good to reject’

Noel Whelan has claimed the prospect of replacing Steven Gerrard with Mauricio Pochettino would be “too good to turn down” for Aston Villa.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Midlands giants would be “very interested” in appointing the 50-year-old if Gerrard can’t “turn things around”.

This site revealed on Saturday (24 September) that Pochettino is keen on the possibility of managing Aston Villa as he plots a return to the Premier League.

It is understood that the former Tottenham boss is keen on finding the “right project” and has not limited himself to a Champions League club.

Aston Villa lost three of their first four Premier League matches this season and manager Gerrard was booed by a section of supporters after their 1-0 defeat to West Ham last month.

Football Insider revealed last month (29 August) that the Liverpool icon’s position as manager is far from secure and the club’s ambitious American owners won’t hesitate to sack him if results do not improve.

Whelan suggested Villa chiefs wouldn’t be “too disappointed” if Gerrard made way for Pochettino.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It would be too good to turn down for Aston Villa.

“I’m sure they’d be very interested in acquiring his services if Steven Gerrard can’t turn things around.

“He’s an exceptional manager.

“But Gerrard has won his last game, he’s going into this weekend looking to build momentum and get back-to-back wins.

“But I don’t think Villa would be too disappointed if they had to replace him with Pochettino.”
