Pundit: This may be real reason Mings lost Aston Villa captaincy

Frank McAvennie has claimed Tyrone Mings will benefit from the Aston Villa captaincy being taken off him.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker said the Steven Gerrard’s decision will take the pressure off of Mings, 29, this season.

On Wednesday (27 July), the club confirmed that Gerrard has named McGinn, 27, captain of the Villans for next season.

The manager said the Scotland international has proven that he is ready to take on the role after his performances and attitude on and off the pitch last season.

Gerrard explained that he wants to take the pressure away from Mings and give him a chance to focus more on his football.

When asked by Football Insider correspondent Charlotte Cohen if losing the captain’s armband spells the beginning of the end for Mings, McAvennie said:

I would not look too much into that. I think it’s just that he’s changed the captaincy.

He’s taken the pressure off Mings. I wouldn’t give Maguire the captaincy at Man United. It is like Mings, he’s a decent player but just let him concentrate on playing football.

Aston Villa

There’s a lot of pressure on the captaincy and McGinn will cruise it. I think it is a good decision by the backroom staff at Villa.

“I wouldn’t read too much into it, he’s just taken the captaincy away from him, that’s it.
