Revealed: Aston Villa to fork out £169m as transfer paperwork emerges

Aston Villa owe around £168.6million in transfer instalments after another year of heavy spending bankrolled by Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, Football Insider analysis shows.

The accounts for 2021-22 – which were released last Friday (3 March) – show that Villa are due to pay other clubs £91.25m in installments this season, with another £77.38m owed beyond that timeframe.

Those figures were true on 31 May 2022, the end of the club’s financial year, although there will have been some fluctuation as Villa have paid off some transfer debts and accrued others.

Villa have spent close to £100m on new recruits across the summer and winter windows this season, bringing in around half that amoung in player sales.

That outlay and associated transfer debt will be represented in Villa’s next set of accounts, albeit at its amortised cost, which effectively spreads a player’s transfer fee over the length of their contract for accounting purposes.

The accounts show that the club spent over £200m on the acquisition of new players in 2021-22.

Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey, Lucas Digne and Danny Ings all arrived on permanent deals during the season, while Philippe Coutinho – whose move has now been made permanent – was among those to join on loan.

Villa recorded their first profit of the Edens and Sawiris era during the financial year thanks in main to the sale of Jack Grealish to Man City for a then British record £100m.

Their turnover for the annum totalled £178.4m, down slightly on the £183.6m they raked in the previous season.

Among the headline figures in the accounts was a £10m payment to former owner Randy Lerner, a clause which was related to Villa staying in the Premier League for three successive seasons.

Villa finished 14th in the league last season under then-manager Steven Gerrard.

They are currently 11th under Julen Lopetegui, who replaced Gerrard in the dugout in November.
