Middlesbrough have agreed to sign Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer, sources have told Football Insider.
The forward, 21, is on the verge of joining the Championship club on loan for the rest of the season after a breakthrough in talks.
The deal could be completed on Wednesday for Archer as he waits for the green light to put paper to paper on the temporary move.
Clubs in the second tier have been queuing up to take Archer on loan for the second half of the season after he struggled for first-team action at Villa.
Archer had a successful spell on loan at Preston last season, where he scored seven goals in 20 Championship appearances.
He is highly regarded at Villa, where he is a graduate of the club’s academy and seen as a future first-team star.
The striker signed a fresh five-year contract at the Midlands giants last summer (2021).
His form at Preston earned Archer a call-up to England’s Under-21 set-up, and he has scored four goals in his first four appearances for Lee Carsley’s side.
Former Villa boss Steven Gerrard confirmed the youngster would be given opportunities in the first team for the 2022-23 season, but was given just 28 minutes of Premier League football prior to his sacking in October.
Sources told Football Insider after Unai Emery’s appointment (10 November) that Aston Villa have set their sights on signing an A-list forward this month.
This site updated to reveal on 28 December that the Midlands side will have to pay a £30million release clause to Villarreal for top target Nicolas Jackson.

Aston Villa sit 12th in the Premier League with Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins scoring eight goals between them.
Middlesbrough are fifth in the Championship having won seven of 10 matches under new boss Michael Carrick.
