Steven Gerrard has no sentimental thoughts ahead of his return to Liverpool as the Aston Villa boss says his side ‘will make it as difficult as possible’

Steven Gerrard has downplayed his return to Liverpool with the Aston Villa boss insistent his side are going there to win.

It will be the first time Reds legend is back at his boyhood club and whilst he will enjoy the reception he is bound to receive at Anfield, Gerrard is only interested in taking three points.

The Aston Villa boss will be hoping his Anfield return is one to remember

Since being appointed as the club’s manager, Gerrard has enjoyed a superb start at Villa Park.

The 41-year-old has overseen his side win three of their last four matches which included a comeback victory against Leicester City.

Gerrard would love to make it four wins out five against Liverpool but knows it will be a tall order getting anything from the league’s top goalscorers.

“None, not at all,” Gerrard said when asked if he had any sentimental feelings going into the game against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Whilst Gerrard will only have the three points on his mind, the afternoon is still set to be an emotional one

“Just want to go there and try and win and try and take what we can.

“For us, we’re not competing with Liverpool in terms of the level we are both at the moment but we’ll certainly go there and give everything we’ve got.

“We took [Man] City to the wire and I believe we should have took something of the game with our second half performance.

“We go there with confidence and belief with three wins out of four and we’re going to make it as difficult as we can.”
