Steven Gerrard has pulled the plug on Aston Villa’s move to sign Ismaila Sarr, talkSPORT understands.
Villa had been set to beat Crystal Palace to sign the Watford winger in a transfer worth around £25million.
Sarr has made it clear to the Hornets that he wants to leave and Gerrard’s team looked like they had won the race.
However, the Villa boss has decided not to proceed with the deal following talks with the player.
Sarr joined Watford for a club record £28.8m in 2019 from Ligue 1 club Rennes and quickly made an impression with five goals in 28 Premier League appearances.
Two of those efforts ended Liverpool’s unbeaten run on the way to their first league title in 30 years, with Sarr scoring twice in a 3-1 win.
The 24-year-old also won the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, scoring against Equatorial Guinea to progress to the semi-finals.
This season he’s already made headlines with a goal of the season contender for Watford.
He scored a stunning effort from his own half against West Brom in a 1-1 draw.
However, he was left out of the Watford squad for their 0-0 draw with Preston on Saturday amid the speculation over his future.
