Brit Supporters Targeted
Disturbing scenes have been reported from Amsterdam where a group of Aston Villa fans were violently assaulted by Ajax supporters. The incident occurred at a train station ahead of the Europa Conference League match on Thursday evening. Video evidence reveals the severity of the attack, with one Villa fan struggling to regain his footing after being knocked down, while others were aggressively ambushed.
Relentless Attack Caught on Camera
The footage captured shows a harrowing scene where a Villa fan is subjected to continuous blows to the head, culminating in him collapsing to the ground. Even as he lay defenseless, the attackers persisted with their kicking. In a brutal show of force, another fan was hit with a flying punch just as he managed to stand, before the video cuts off abruptly, leaving the aftermath unknown.
A Troubling History of Hooliganism
Ajax supporters have a notorious history of violence, especially surrounding football matches. In 2019, four Ajax fans were imprisoned for their involvement in violent activities against police officers prior to a Champions League semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur, which resulted in grave injuries for a fan. The Dutch culprits also received a six-year ban from all UK football stadiums.
Recent Clashes and Police Intervention
September 2023 saw Ajax fans clashing with Marseille supporters, leading to riot police intervention and explosive confrontations. In another incident in October, police had to resort to using batons to quell violence after a match between Brighton and Ajax, with one officer being pushed to the ground amidst the chaos.
Efforts to Combat Football Hooliganism
The Royal Dutch Football Association has implemented new measures to address the issue of hooliganism, including stadium bans and the potential suspension of matches. Despite these efforts, experts argue that the current state of anarchy among fans requires even more rigorous actions to ensure safety and order at football events.
