West Ham join Aston Villa in hunt for ex-Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi as race to secure deal before January window shuts heats up

West Ham are joining the race to sign Matteo Guendouzi before the end of the January transfer window.

The former Arsenal midfielder currently plays for Marseille and has been hugely impressive, scoring nine goals and getting 18 assists in 81 appearances.

This comes after he made 82 appearances for the Gunners before heading back to France on an initial loan in 2021, after a well-publicised falling out with Mikel Arteta.

David Moyes’ side are looking for midfield reinforcements following a disappointing season so far.

While Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta have failed to shine this term, there’s also ongoing speculation around Declan Rice’s future.

The England midfielder is a summer transfer target for Chelsea and Arsenal, among others, meaning that Moyes could be looking for a long-term successor to his current talisman.

With Guendouzi having Premier League experience at the highest level and time firmly on his side, he could be seen as an ideal long-term addition.
