Whelan hails Mings contract extension

Aston Villa have sealed a “massive” piece of business by tying Tyrone Mings down to a new deal, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds United striker claimed that the England international has established himself as a talismanic figure for Dean Smith’s men since his arrival from Bournemouth in January of last year.

The 27-year-old recently put pen to paper on a contract extension that will keep him at Villa Park until at least 2024.

Whelan has hailed the agreement as a positive move from the Villans, as well as reiterating Mings’ importance on and off the field.

Speaking to Football Insider, when asked how significant the contract extension is, he said: “It’s massive.

“He’s been their talisman since he came in, in my opinion. He’s the one that has sured them up at the back – he’s the one who looks like the leader at the back and the leader in the changing room and out there on the field.

“They see his worth, which is why they’ve given him a new contract, and they’ll want to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future because he’s a fantastic centre-half.

“He’s got everything you would want from a centre-half. He ticks all the boxes and he’s now an England international. You want to tie down these important commodities in your side for as long as possible.”

Mings has established himself as a mainstay of Villa’s backline since signing from Bournemouth, featuring 57 times for Dean Smith’s side in all competitions.

He has started this season brightly too, providing the assist for Ezri Konsa’s goal in the Villans’ 1-0 opening day victory over Sheffield United.
