Why Ollie Watkins’ second Aston Villa goal stood as Brighton fans fume over VAR call

Brighton fans have been left angered after Ollie Watkins scored his second goal for Aston Villa.

Seagulls supporters believe that Nicolo Zaniolo obstructed the vision of the goalkeeper but the strike was allowed to stand.

Watkins gave Villa the lead after 14 minutes at home to Brighton with a close-range finish from Matty Cash’s cross.

The hosts made it 2-0 thanks to the 27-year-old soon after as he cut inside and found the bottom corner in impressive fashion.

However, many feel as though the goal should not have counted as Zaniolo could be seen in the eyeline of Jason Steele.

However, a VAR check adjudged that his view of the strike was not obstructed by the Galatasaray loanee.

As a result, Villa were able to keep hold of their 2-0 lead, but Brighton fans believe they have been hard done by.

Taking on X, one said: “100 per cent [should have been disallowed], but just another inconsistency in premier league refereeing! Does ANYONE know what the rules are anymore?”

“Clearly in the line of sight of Steele in a offside position but it’s given. What a joke,” added another.

A third said: “In Steeles line of sight, how the hell is that allowed?”

It then went from bad to worse for Brighton towards the end of the first half as Pervis Estupinan scored an own-goal to make it 3-0.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side were on hand to pull one back early in the second half through Ansu Fati, his first for the club.

However, Watkins sealed his hat-trick just after the hour mark to make it four goals in his last two appearances.
