Tyrone Mings jokingly tries to steal Ollie Watkins’ Man of the Match award after superb Aston Villa performance

Ollie Watkins put in another superb performance for Aston Villa in their huge win against Newcastle, but he wasn’t the only one.

The striker’s two goals in the 3-0 victory earned him the Man of the Match award, but Villa were as good at the back as they were going forward – a point Tyrone Mings jokingly wanted to make after full-time.

Watkins’ performance against the Magpies, in which he also assisted Jacob Ramsey’s opener, has ensured that Villa remain sixth in the Premier League.

The striker is now on 15 goals for the season, with 11 of those coming in his last 12 games.

Just as Watkins was about to speak to BT Sport after the game alongside Ramsey, Mings walked past the duo and saw the Man of the Match award.

“That’s for me surely?” he asked with a cheeky grin, but soon realised it wasn’t and walked away.

Watkins was eventually handed his award, capping off an excellent afternoon for the 27-year-old.

A goal on the hour-mark was ruled out for offside by VAR, but he wasn’t to be denied again as he found the back of the net just moments later to double Villa’s lead.

Watkins certainly has a key eye for goal

With seven minutes remaining he added his second of day, sealing a crucial three points in their quest for European football.

England boss Gareth Southgate was spotted in the stands at Villa Park, with a Three Lions call-up potentially on the cards for Watkins.

His last appearance for the national team came last March in an international friendly against Ivory Coast, where he scored the first goal in a 3-0 win.

The striker has continued his fine form for Villa

It was his seventh appearance for England, although this tally could increase in the coming months.

Southgate and co. will play Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia in June.

Captain and all-time record scorer Harry Kane is likely to still start, but Watkins could join him in a list of attacking options.
