An angry Liverpool called for Jurgen Klopp to be SACKED after watching the Premier League champions get ‘absolutely spanked’ by Aston Villa on Sunday.
Klopp suffered the worst defeat of his managerial career, and the club’s heaviest since 1963, as they lost 7-2 in an extraordinary match at Villa Park.
Liverpool’s back four was dismantled by Dean Smith’s side, who were 4-1 up at half-time thanks to an Ollie Watkins hat-trick, while Jack Grealish had a hand in five of the goals with a brace and three assists.
A fuming Klopp admitted after the game his players were guilty of making ‘massive mistakes’, but many supporters would have seen this result coming, albeit probably not against Villa.
While the Reds stormed to the club’s first title in 30 years last season, their defence has not been as solid since the Premier League restart, and Klopp has yet to find a solution.
Liverpool have conceded 11 goals in their first four matches of the new campaign, including their 4-3 opening day win over promoted Leeds United.
Aaron the Reds fan called into Darren Bent’s Boot Room to have his say after a disastrous evening in Birmingham, and he was quite clear about what he thinks should happen next…
“Klopp has got to go, he’s got to go,” he said, quite clearly upset.
“I’m sorry, but he’s got to go.
“Listen, I know I’m not from up north, I know I’m not a Scouser, but how many times have we got to address these defensive issues? He has to go!”
I think he’s trying to tell us something…
“We’re conceding SEVEN to Villa, but it should have been nine or ten!”
Well, he’s not wrong there. Watkins could have had at least five on Sunday night, as he was denied a brilliant goal by the crossbar in the second-half.
“OK, it was a bad game,” added Aaron, “But Klopp said last week that we take risks by playing a high line, and we’ve been showed up by Villa. They have absolutely spanked us.
“Klopp has got to address this problem, or he’s got to go!”
Aaron wasn’t the only one fuming about Liverpool’s nightmare evening at Villa Park, either.
Darren Bent was also joined on the phone by Reds fan David, who was absolutely seething that the club still haven’t strengthened this summer – with the defeat proving they need another centre-back and a new back-up keeper.
He fears the worst ahead of the upcoming Merseyside derby, saying in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin ‘could score two hat-tricks against this defence’.
And he also says Liverpool can forget the Premier League title, and could even miss out on the top four, if their woes at the back continue.
“This was coming,” he said.
“Fans were there when we lost 3-0 to relegated Watford and when they were 2-0 up against Atletico Madrid and blew that just before the lockdown.
“Liverpool let in three goals against Leeds and only won it 4-3, they did better against Chelsea but then Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane have both got coronavirus, and they clearly miss him, but why didn’t Liverpool sign a decent goalkeeper as backup for Allison?
“Because if Allison gets injured, as has happened, you can’t have a goalkeeper who worse than Loris Karius as a back-up, and that’s who we’ve got. He’s responsible for at least letting four or those goals in.
“Virgil van Dijk can’t do it all by himself, he is the only decent defender in that Liverpool side.
“The others are attacking wingers like Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, I don’t think that much of Joe Gomez either, but if they don’t buy back-up for Van Dijk, if he gets injured or sent off or gets coronavirus, who are they going to have at the back?
“We’ve conceded seven goals and that was only against Aston Villa, we’re up against Everton next and Dominic Calvert-Lewin could score TWO hat-tricks against that defence. It’s just not good enough!
“This is worse than Man City losing to Leicester.
“Liverpool can kiss the Premier League title goodbye and they might not even get into the top four if they keep conceding like this.”
